Is your beef forage fed and finished?
Forage Fed or Forage Finished beef is another way of saying Grass Fed and Grass Finished. The same principles apply however instead of using the word grass they use the word forage.
Forage is the leafy part of Grasses and legumes (such as alfalfa) fed to animals and can be in three different forms: Pasture: Cows graze on grasses or legumes that grow in pastures. Hay: grasses and legumes are cut in the field, dried in the sun, and then baled for feeding at a later date. Silage: grasses and legumes are cut, chopped while still moist, and put in sealed bales or piles to ferment so they can be preserved (like the canned foods we eat).
Our Beef is 100% forage/grass fed and forage/grass finished and never receive any grains at any time. Grass/forage fed and Grass/forage finished are two terms that are not regulated in Canada and so have become very confusing as they can mean different things according to how the producer interprets it. For the most part the common understanding is that grass/forage fed means that some of the cattle’s diet has at some point in their life been grass. Grass finished is most commonly used when cattle have been finished (fattened in preparation for processing) using grass.
Our cattle have a life long diet of 100% grass as this is cattle’s natural diet and they have a unique digestive system that allows them to thrive on grass/forage. In the summer they are moved daily onto our fresh organic pasture to allow them access to new grasses/forage. This maximizes the benefits of grazing, on the land, animals and environment. In the winter they are fed high quality hay/forage in their winter pasture and given windbreaks and lots of straw to keep them dry and warm.
How Do I Cook Your Chicken, Beef Or Pork Patties?
To cook our chicken, pork or beef patties it is best to cook them from frozen. Pop the patties apart using your hands or if they are a bit stuck using a dull knife to separate them. Cooking them from frozen is important as if they are thawed the meat becomes very soft and hard to work with. After the patties are separated you can cook them in a frying pan on medium to medium-low heat with a little bit of oil or fat added to the pan or you can bake them in the oven. They cook quicker than our sausages as they are thinner. The temperature you cook them at and the time needed can vary as every pan, stove, oven and bbq cooks differently. You will know they are cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165 F.

Can I come out for a tour of the farm?
Due to the high number of tour requests and the time it takes to do a tour, we no longer do private tours of the farm. We found that they were taking away from the time that was needed to take care of the animals and complete the farm chores.
Our only tour day is our annual Family Farm Day every year on Labour Day Monday in September (Sept 1st this year) . On this day customers can come out and see the farm. The tour normally starts at 1pm and ends between 3:30pm-5pm depending on weather, the number of questions people have and how many people come. Information and registrations will be available at the beginning of August.
If you would like to view some videos of how we raise our animals before our Family Farm Day we made some homemade videos in September 2020 when we could not have in person tours. You can view them by typing in Sunworks Farm to the You tube search engine or by following this link. https://www.youtube.com/@sunworksfarmorganic9922
