Looking to put a little “oomph” into your farm’s profits? If so, you may want to check out an upcoming conference in Camrose.
The Energizing the Family Farm conference – an event designed to help farmers interested in direct marketing – will take place Nov. 8-9 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. It will feature several presentations by keynote speaker Joel Salatin, an acclaimed author, speaker and Virginia farmer.
Salatin is a third-generation alternative farmer whose farm services more than 400 customers, farmers’ markets, metropolitan buying clubs and 30 restaurants with everything from salad bar beef to forage-raised rabbits to pasture turkey.
Salatin’s presentations carry several themes, including “Let animals do the work,” “Value-adding through marketing,” Diversity and multiple use,” “Organic matter,” “Fully utilizing resources before buying anything” and “Surviving on the family farm.” Woven throughout his presentations is a strong consumer thrust: “Seek out and support your local alternative farmer.”
He has written four books – Pastured Poultry Profit$ “Net $25,000 in 6 months on 10 acres,” Salad Bar Beef, You Can Farm: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Start and Succeed in a Farming Enterprise and Family Friendly Farming: A Multi-Generational Home-Based Business Testament.

His farm, Polyface Inc., has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic and profiled on ABC World News.
Other speakers will include Don Halladay of Rocky Mountain House and Laurel Pedersen of Cochrane. Halladay will present a “holistic management primer” with views on how to use holistic methods to enhance the viability of one’s farm and quality of life.
Pedersen will speak on her studies of globalization and their impact on the opportunities for the family farm. She will enhance her presentation with reflections on her recent trip to Russia.
